Image
Sean Monahan scored three power-play goals for his first NHL hat trick and Michael Frolik scored in overtime to lift the Flames past Flyers. Hats off to Mony! Sean Monahan  scored his first career hat-trick,  Johnny Gaudreau  scored to extend his goal-scoring streak, and  Michael Frolik  tallied in overtime as the Flames beat the Flyers 5-4 In Philadelphia Saturday. Mike Smith  stopped 35 of 39 shots in the win, returning to the lineup after missing two games and two periods of another. Brandon Manning, Sean Couturier, Ivan Provorov, and Nolan Patrick answered for the Flyers. Brian Elliott, playing his first game against the Flames since leaving the team, stopped 26 of 31 shots. "When guys step up and do little things, it means a lot to the guys on the bench," Monahan said. "So I think tonight was a big win, Smitty stood on his head again like always, and we're leaving here with two points that we came for." It was the Flyers who opened...

Flyers Fall to the Wild

Image
1. HERE'S WHAT HAPPENED The Flyers broke out early and opened up a 2-0 lead in the first six minutes, but Mark Scheifele scored with 49 seconds left in regulation to force overtime and Bryan Little tallied the final goal in the shootout to give the Jets a 3-2 win at Winnipeg. Jakub Voracek  snapped the Flyers goal skid three minutes into the game off a feed from  Sean Couturier , who capitalized on the first power-play by slamming home a rebound to give the Flyers the early two-goal lead.  That's the way it stayed until Mathieu Perreault brought the Jets within one on a power play goal of their own in the second period. The third remained scoreless until Scheifele's goal came with the goaltender pulled for a 6-on-5 advantage. After a scoreless overtime with multiple chances on both sides, Jake Voracek and  Jordan Weal  tallied for the Flyers in the shootout, which took four rounds to decide.  Brian Elliott  stopped 31 shots for the Flyers,...

Wild Outlast Flyers

Image
1. HERE'S WHAT HAPPENED The Wild used a goal 12 seconds into the game and shut down several Flyers scoring chances throughout to earn a 3-0 win over the Flyers in Minnesota on Tuesday night. Off the opening face-off and a dump in the Flyers zone, Eric Staal took the puck out from the corner and found Nino Niederreiter in the low slot and roofed it on Elliott to get the opening tally. From there, the Flyers pressed hard in the second period, firing 17 shots on goal, but couldn't get one past the hot play of Dubnyk, who made 30 saves. The Wild scored two empty-netters as Elliott stopped 17 of 18 shots in the loss. 2. TURNING POINT A flurry of Grade-A scoring chances that just wouldn't go in around the midway point of the second period could've ended the Flyers scoring drought and opened up the game in the Flyers favor.  Scott Laughton  had a pair of chances which included a point-blank shot and a rebound, while  Sean Couturier 's multiple chances around t...

Flyers Shutdown By The Wild

Image
1. HERE'S WHAT HAPPENED One goal off of one bouncing puck is all that was needed as the Wild rode Devan Dubnyk to a 1-0 shut out win over the Flyers on Saturday night at the Wells Fargo Center. Jason Zucker scored early in the third period  (more on that below)  while Dubnyk shut down 32 Flyers shots and three power plays, including two in the last half of the game, to grab the first win of a home-and-home series. Brian Elliott  made 26 saves in the loss, while Dubnyk recorded his second straight shutout to get the Wild back to a .500 record.   2. TURNING POINT The turning point in this chess match rested on one play in which a bad angle shot from Jason Zucker early in third period was the difference maker. The play unfolded off a shot from the point by Wild d-man Matt Dumba that missed the net wide by a large margin and rebounded to the other side of the net where Zucker was positioned. He took a whack at the puck as Elliott tried to recover, but it j...

Flyers Gained Top Flight Against Hawks in 3-1 Victory

Image
1. HERE'S WHAT HAPPENED The Flyers top line dominated the action, factoring into all three goals en route to a 3-1 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks on Thursday night at the Wells Fargo Center. Claude Giroux  kicked off the scoring five minutes into the game off a play that developed in the neutral zone and a great pass from  Jakub Voracek . Later in the first, the Flyers captain then made a great play getting the puck to  Shayne Gostisbehere , who then threaded a cross-ice pass to Jakub Voracek who buried it past Crawford to make it 2-0. Sean Couturier  scored four minutes into the second period to complete the line's contribution to the game and the Flyers special teams came up big with a 5-on-3 shorthanded penalty kill at the end of the frame to keep it a two-goal game. Defenseman Connor Murphy scored the lone Blackhawks goal to break up  Brian Elliott 's shutout bid. Elliott made 38 saves, while Corey Crawford stopped 28 of 31 shots in the loss. ...
